  Julie Nelson is Interim Regional Director at the Small Business Development Center (SBDC), at Minnesota State University, Mankato. The SBDC is a grant-funded nonprofit that provides professional consulting and training to entrepreneurs and small businesses. The program assists over 400 clients each year.
Julie has nearly 20 years of experience in economic and business development. Prior to joining the SBDC, she led business retention activities at Greater Mankato Economic Development Corporation. She participated in the successful recruitment of E-Travel Experts, Calpine Energy Center and the WalMart distribution Center to Greater Mankato. She also coordinated InterCity Leadership trips taking a delegation of 80+ community leaders to Bellingham, WA and Fort Collins, CO to explore best practices, which resulted in several new initiatives in Greater Mankato.
Julie completed Business Retention & Expansion Consultant certification (BREI in 2002.) In addition, she has completed advanced training in economic development finance, business retention and managing economic development organizations. She is a graduate of the Minnesota State University Leadership Institute and Leadership Institute of Greater Mankato.
Julie attended South Central College and completed the Mini MBA and Mini Master of Business Communication at the University of St. Thomas.
She currently serves on the South Central College Small Business Advisory Committee, Greater Mankato City Center Partnership, President’s Commission on the Status of Women at Minnesota State University, member of Mankato Business & Professional Women (BPW).
She is the recipient of a SHERO award from the YWCA of Mankato and was named 2014 State Star by the Minnesota SBDC Network. She received a 2016 Outstanding Alumni Award from South Central College. In 2017, she was selected for a Progress Minnesota award from Finance & Commerce.
