The Community Development Director is responsible for developing, directing, and providing ongoing leadership to the community development department which encompasses sustainability; heritage preservation and urban design; land use planning policies and regulations; the efficient processing and issuance of development permits; and compliance with housing and building standards, plan checking, inspection and correction of hazards.  The Director guides day-to-day decision making processes and provides direction for coordinated and collaborative service delivery to the development community within the objectives established in the City Councils Strategic Priorities, the City's Comprehensive Plan and all other related policies pertaining to the community development activities described above.
This position is part of the City's Development Services and Infrastructure (DSI) Leadership Team and is responsible for implementing the vision of becoming America’s Most Innovative Development Services Team. Successful performance of the work requires the ability to independently implement programs, projects, and policies in conformance with generally accepted standards.  Participation in evening meetings will be necessary.  

Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in City and Regional Planning, Urban Planning, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related field from an accredited college or university AND at least seven years of supervisory leadership and administrative experience in municipal planning, economic development, or community development. A valid driver's license is also required.

This position involves a high degree of responsibility and technical competency within a professional framework both in the office and field including coordinating Code provisions with requirements of other city departments, supervising the timely and competent performance of all building and trade inspections, and verifying Code compliance of buildings during constructions, as well as of existing buildings. An employee in this position is responsible for the overall activities of the building inspections division and will provide leadership to inspectors and chief inspectors. Work is performed under general direction with considerable independent judgment.

The Economic Development Coordinator conducts core program activities for Grow Minnesota!, the Chamber’s private sector led business retention and assistance program. Grow Minnesota! is led by the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce and is operated in collaboration with nearly 90+ local chambers and economic development organizations in Minnesota.  Core duties include business assistance/outreach, program support/communications, special economic development initiatives and events, and data analysis.

Bachelor’s degree in economics, business, public policy/urban planning, non-profit management, public administration, real estate, or other related field of economic development; two years or more of direct experience working within an economic development program; or equivalent, combined relevant experience.  
Knowledge of and interest in the development and growth of Minnesota’s economy.
