Comcast: Advancing DEI and Bridging the Digital Divide with Project UP

Comcast Logo

At Comcast, our commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) drives innovation and strengthens our organization. We believe that embracing diverse backgrounds, perspectives, cultures, and experiences across our workforce, products, and content makes us more successful. Together with our partners, we strive to combat injustices related to race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, and veteran status.

One of the most impactful ways we advance equity is through Project UP, our ambitious program designed to bridge the digital divide and create opportunities for everyone to thrive in today’s connected world.

Key Components of Project UP
  1. Affordable Internet Access
Through the Internet Essentials Program, we’ve connected over 10 million low-income Americans to affordable, high-speed internet since 2011. This program offers low-cost broadband, low-cost laptops, and free digital literacy training to help families fully participate in school, work, and everyday life.
  2. Lift Zones
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Comcast launched Lift Zones to provide gigabit-speed internet at community centers across the country. These safe, trusted spaces—located in existing community centers, libraries, schools, and similar locations—offer free Wi-Fi and high-speed connectivity to individuals who lack reliable internet access at home. Lift Zones enable students to complete homework, parents to work remotely, and families to access critical online resources, helping to bridge the digital divide and support underserved communities.
  3. Grants for Digital Navigators
Project UP supports nonprofits that deploy digital navigators—trained experts who:
    • Set up devices like laptops and smartphones.
    • Provide internet safety training.
    • Teach essential digital literacy skills to empower individuals to navigate theonline world with confidence.
  4. Support for Nonprofits and Community Organizations
We partner with thousands of organizations to address barriers to digital adoption. These partnerships focus on outreach, awareness, and innovative solutions to connect more people to digital opportunities.
  5. Expanding Access Beyond Affordability
While affordability is a key barrier to connectivity, Project UP recognizes that awareness and digital skills are equally critical. Many individuals remain disconnected simply because they are unaware of affordable broadband options or lack the skills to use digital tools effectively. Project UP addresses these challenges by combining education, outreach, and direct support.

Why Project UP Matters

Access to the internet is essential for education, employment, and healthcare. Yet, digital inequities persist, reinforcing systemic barriers. Project UP aims to level the playing field, ensuring everyone—regardless of their circumstances—has access to the resources they need to thrive.

Through our efforts, we are working to:

  • Close the homework gap by connecting students to reliable internet.
  • Promote economic mobility by providing access to remote work opportunities and job resources.
  • Foster digital equity to ensure no community is left behind.

With Project UP, we’re not just bridging the digital divide—we’re creating pathways to opportunity, connection, and success for millions of individuals and families.
